A torsion spring is not a DIY repair, full stop - the wind-up tension on a standard residential door can put someone in the hospital, and that's true whether the door is five years old or twenty-five. What you can reasonably handle yourself: lubricating rollers and hinges once or twice a year, checking that the photo-eye sensors near the floor are aligned and clean, and tightening loose bolts on the track brackets. If your opener is from the original 1997-era build and still running, swapping the remote battery or resetting the travel limits is usually a five-minute job with the manual. Past that - spring tension, cable replacement, bent track - call it in. We'd rather talk you out of a job you shouldn't attempt than charge you to fix what went wrong after.
